NBC'S "LAW & ORDER" STAR SET TO PORTRAY THE LATE GREAT MARVIN GAYE ON THE BIG SCREEN Finally, a feature film about the life of Marvin Gaye has been given the green light. Jesse L. Martin, star of NBC's " Law & Order" and the feature film "Rent", will portray Motown's finest in the independently-financed film "Sexual Healing." The movie, to be directed by Lauren Goodman from her own script, will focus on the years preceding his sudden shooting death at the hands of his father on April 1, 1984, one day before his 45th birthday. The film will include his self-imposed exile in Europe after years of battling drugs, domestic issues and label headaches. There, he was rescued by a promoter who helped Gaye record his biggest-selling album, "Midnight Love," supported by his comeback smash, "Sexual Healing." "More than just being the voice of a generation, Marvin Gaye proved to be its very heartbeat," Goodman told the Hollywood Reporter. "As a filmmaker, I was drawn to tell the story of a human being who was never fully realized, one with faults and foibles and an uncommon grace expressed every time he picked up the microphone." According to the Hollywood Reporter, producers have been trying to get a Marvin Gaye biopic off the ground. Originally, "Sexual healing" was intended to cover a larger portion of his life but refocused on his final years because of rights issues with his Motown-produced records. I wonder (as I'm so prone to do) why Motown wouldn't be the ones to put this type of picture together from start to end? Then they could start from the time of Mr. Gaye's birth in April 1944 until his death in April 1984. Then there would be no issues regarding the rights to his music on the Motown label. Why can't black folks do like white folks do when it comes to upholding our greatest, our brightest and our shining stars? It couldn't be financing cause like my boy rapper Too Short would say, "There's money in the ghetto"! So why does it always take a white person or so-called Jewish person to tell our story? Can anyone out there name just how many DIFFERENT Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy and Amy Fisher movies are out there? Too many to name, the point is they GET MADE! Black people who are in that kind of financial position should step up to the plate and do the same regarding our entertainers cause there's always some black person to ready to make the next Dr. Martin Luther King Story but we don't see too many black entertainer type movies. That was not in any way a slight against Dr. King only an example of the fact there are already about a gazillion King movies and probably about a hundred more waiting to be made. Maybe the white woman's savior of all things possible in the world, The black woman, Oprah Winfrey might find the time to "finance" the next big black biopic...Who knows? General Nikki X would suggest "The Lena Horne Story"! While the beautiful and elegant Ms. Horne is STILL alive! I mean come on, Ms. Horne will be 90 years old next year! That's just me. Could it be black folk follow Earth Wind and Fires axiom “looking backwards the future fastly disappears”?
