Blind Justice? Black Man Sentenced to 50 Years for Stealing Ribs

Willie Smith Ward of Waco, TX was sentenced to 50 years for tucking a rack of ribs under his shirt inside of a local grocery store in September 2011. The jurors in Waco’s 19th State District Court were less than impressed with 43-year-old Ward’s previous five felony and four misdemeanor convictions and recommended that Ward be sentenced to 50 years in prison as a habitual criminal.
Jurors took two minutes on Wednesday to convict Ward on robbery charges and about an hour to decide his punishment, according to a local news website. His conviction for stealing the $35 ribs was considered a robbery after he threatened a store employee who followed him out to the parking lot and interrogated him about the bulge in his shirt. The employee testified that he asked Ward what was under the shirt and the slab of ribs fell to the ground. He asked Ward what else he was hiding and Ward said, “I got a knife.” The employee added that Ward further threatened him by stating: “If you don’t leave me alone, I’ll show you what I got.” At that point, Ward ran off.
“This verdict shows that the citizens of this county will not tolerate a continued disrespect and disregard for other people and their property,” said Assistant District Attorney J.R. Vicha, who prosecuted Ward with Chris Bullajian. “People who choose to do so will be dealt with seriously and appropriately.” Ward’s sentence and conviction comes just months after the U.S. Sentencing Commission released a report revealing that Black men received sentences that were a whopping 19.5 percent longer than white men found guilty for similar crimes between December 2007 and September 2011.
The mass incarceration of our Black men is evident, especially in racist states like Texas. We can not allow Ward’s punishment to go unchallenged.

Then the white man in the story above proudly stated in that last statement, "We can not allow Ward's punishment to go unchallenged." This devil is diabolically wicked to the umpteenth degree.
50 damn years in the pen for some ribs. We see how the black man can't catch a break under this unjust just-us system. Catching cases for so-called crimes where the punishment doesn't even fit. Brothers, when you catch a case your woman suffers too. She has to hold down the family and the home if the two of you have a child(ren), and if you don't have a child(ren) together then she's just out here holding herself down ... and you!
The black family unit is destroyed when these brothers go to prison! And for Willie Smith Ward's family, one can only wonder what they are experiencing and dealing with. In looking at this man's mugshot photo, it looks like Willie Smith Ward got his ass beat by the pigs before he was "taken into custody". Do you smell police brutality? We do!
Bottom Line is This: Who gives a shit if this man stole a rack of ribs or if he stole a pound of ribeye steaks! 50 fucking years for a misjudgment like that is absolutely absurd! It really comes down to 50 years in prison for being hungry!

General Nikki X I read this and it turned my stomach. My nigga went to prison selling cane to feed us got knocked now he's doing 10 years! We have 2 kids a girl and a boy and yes I am holding his black ass down to! Its hard its a stuggle and for real I need another nigga to help us out. I don't wanna cheat on my man but what am I to do? What's your opinion on that?

A sister thats struggling
The sister above me really got to me cuz I feel her pain. I got kids 3 with a nigga thats locked up he robbed a store and got 5 1/2 years he's been in for 3 and we fucked up out here I work but shit rent duke clothes for these kids keeping gas in my raggedty car and paying for shit like school fees and trip eating a hole out my ass! That sister that said she needs another niggah to fill in the gap I feel her cuz I had 1 about a 8 months ago but kicked him to the curb cuz he was supposed to come up in here helping us not being my 4th child! Fuck that nigga GET OUT! So I do feel her. 50 years for some ribs I don't care how many felonys and shit he got thats messed up and it do look like the police whooped his ass thats a damn shame! I know my nigga beating ass in prison cuz he stay in the hole!
